Government Invites Opposition for Dialogue to Revitalize the Charter of Democracy
The government extended an invitation opposition parties on to engage in discussions aimed at strengthening and advancing the Charter of Democracy, a pivotal document signed in 2006 by PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif and the late Benazir Bhutto. The charter embodies a mutual commitment to oppose authoritarian rule and uphold democratic principles.
During a Senate session, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah emphasized the government’s willingness to foster dialogue. He stated, “Let us sit together to strengthen and take forward the Charter of Democracy,” highlighting that such engagement could serve as a foundation for reinforcing democratic institutions.
Sanaullah further expressed that dialogue, rather than confrontation, is essential for the country’s progress. “We are ready to sit with you for the betterment of the nation,” he affirmed, recalling that even when PTI was in power, coalition parties underscored the importance of negotiations.
Conversely, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, founder of PTI, remained hesitant to participate in talks, citing his “stubbornness” as a significant obstacle to dialogue. This stance underscores ongoing political tensions and the challenges faced in fostering consensus among major political entities.
